Matthias Stelzner, MD, FACS

Dr. Matthias Stelzner received his surgical residency training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston. He was a faculty member of the Surgery departments at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and later at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA where he was appointed Vice-Chairman in 2003.

For the past six years, Dr. Stelzner has served as Chief of Surgery at the Greater Los Angeles Veterans Hospital and Professor and Vice-Chairman in the Department of Surgery at UCLA. Dr. Stelzner’s clinical work concentrates on hepatobiliary, intestinal and colorectal surgery.

Dr. Stelzner’s laboratory research is focused on the physiology of intestinal absorption as well as on the generation of bioengineered intestinal mucosa. Dr. Stelzner is an NIH-funded investigator and a member of the NIH Intestinal Stem Cell Consortium. Dr. Stelzner is a Past-President of the Association for Academic Surgery and the GI editor of the Journal for Surgical Research.
